Almost everyone these days has a website, either to promote their business, make extra money or to provide others with information about a hobby or interest that they enjoy. Jeffrey Pell creates webpages for a hobby in his spare time. Fortunately, with all the tools and information available, anyone can create their own webpages cheaply and easily.
Building a good webpage will help you get started to the ultimate goal which will be building your own website. To start, you will want to decide how you would like to go about building your webpage. You can do this in three different ways: use a pre-made template, use an HTML editor, or hand-code your HTML in a text editor. The pre-made template is the best option for the beginner, as you can create nice looking sites quickly with no prior knowledge of HTML. These templates can be compatible with Dreamweaver, GoLive and Frontpage.
Using an HTML editor such as Dreamweaver or NetObjects Fusion is also fairly easy, you just lose some control as the program will take over. If you like to have the most control over what you are doing and you are familiar with HTML coding, then this is your best option. The next step is exploring HTML tags. Tags are placed in and around images and text that create markers for the web browser to decipher.
Don’t let this intimidate you. At first the codes and everything look complicated and techy, but once you figure out the codes and what they mean, it is actually quite simple. HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language, that can be applied to webpage content. This might be a paragraph, a bulleted list, or images and videos. They essentially tell your browser how things are supposed to be displayed on your page. There are many good YouTube videos on the structure of an HTML page and how to use tags.
After you write some HTML code, you will want to save it. Using the “save as” function name the file WebPage.html. At this point you should be able to go to its “file” menu and select open file and then select the page. If your webpage isn’t perfect, don’t despair as it is your first try. Youtube should be a big help in every step of the process. If you didn’t get it right, go through the steps again until you do. After you have mastered this technique, you should feel comfortable going to the next level of building your own website.
